Many years ago, it was believed that funerals should take place within a few days of death. Of course, this was when most people didn’t venture far from home and did not live or travel overseas
Nowadays, the timing of the funeral is entirely up to you.

How long should you wait?

Some of the things to consider when deciding when to hold the funeral are the location of family and friends who will wish to attend the funeral service. If they are overseas, it would be wise to determine how long it will take them to return to New Zealand and factor this into the funeral timing. Add a day or two to their expected arrival, just in case they encounter delays with flights or suffer from jet lag upon arrival.

Bear in mind that the stress involved in attending the funeral can be difficult enough, add in the debilitating effects of travelling long distances and it can be too much to handle in just a few days.

Cultural Considerations and Awareness

South Canterbury boasts many different cultures and religions. Over the years we have established good relationships with a wide range of community groups.

We can do everything we can to accommodate your practices and protocols.

Some religions and cultures have strict rules regarding the timing of funeral rites and burials. Sometimes, it is necessary to conduct funeral rites within hours of death.
Our team can work with you for whatever you need.
Please advise us if these apply in your case.
