The type of reading you choose depends partially upon the type of service you intend to have. If it’s a religious funeral service, it would be wise to consult with the clergy conducting the service. They can provide a list of readings that will suit your circumstances. Readings during a religious service are usually done at a specific time and your minister, pastor or priest will let you know about this.

Readings, Poems and VersesIf you’re planning a service in our chapel or in another venue you may wish to choose readings yourself. Celebrants are usually very helpful in providing a number of readings to choose from. You might have some of your own, or your deceased loved one’s, favourite verses, poems, song lyrics or quotations that would suit the occasion.
These can be read at any stage during the funeral, from the very beginning of the service to a grave-side reading at the end. |
Reading Out LoudIf you have decided your would like to read out loud yourself, it can feel very daunting. One of the things that does help, is practice, practice, practice. If you can get to the stage that you know some or all of the words you are going to say, it can remove a-lot of pressure from yourself. If you are unsure of the correct pronunciation of a word, even with practice you cannot say it, you may wish to substitute with a word with the same meaning.
Credit the author, where possible of any poems, readings or verses. |
