Many families choose to honour the passions in their loved one’s life by staging the setting in which the casket stands before and during the service. Choosing to add personal items that were dear to your loved one’s heart helps to create a very personal space that sparks memories for family and friends attending the service. Their personal things tell a story about who they were and what they loved.

The Personal Touches

It doesn’t take much to make a funeral a more personal event, one that eloquently speaks of the person who has just died. All it really takes is a little thought. We’d be happy to help you set the scene with personal touches for your loved one’s funeral.
Some simple ways are:
  • Light memorial candles.
  • Display sporting equipment, crafts or hobby tools.
  • Have a piper play bagpipes.
  • Release balloons or doves or even butterflies.
  • Create a photo display.
  • Display a favourite piece of furniture, like an armchair no-one but your loved one was allowed to sit in.
  • If your loved one was a veteran of the military, have the RSA attend their funeral. Hand out poppies

Ways to use Memento's

Read how Eddie, Tina and George's Memento's were used in their Services.

Eddie was a passionate golfer whose pride and joy was a very expensive set of titanium clubs. His crowning achievement was a hole-in-one on a local golf course. His golf clubs sat beside his casket and his trophy and golf gloves sat on top. These small personal touches enhanced the funeral, reminding family and friends of the man and the many happy days he spent on the golf course"

Tina was a primary school teacher who loved tramping on weekends. Many of the children she taught drew pictures for her and these were displayed on a whiteboard behind her casket. The schoolchildren were glad to have been able to play a part in farewelling their teacher. The fact that they had something constructive to do for her made it somehow easier for them. Tina’s tramping boots sat on the end of her casket with her sleeping bag. Her backpack sat underneath as a representation of her love of nature and the great outdoors

George fell in love with his first model train, given to him by his grandfather when he was only four. It was to become a lifelong love affair, so of course, some of George’s favourite trains were present at his funeral. His tatty old slippers were also present to remind his loved ones of the many hours they’d sat with him with his feet up beside the fire, drinking hot chocolate.
